Blue Lights College got 30 points from point guard Richard Campbell and never trailed in putting away Carolina Christian College 98-90 Tuesday night in Apex.

The Thoroughbreds (6-5) jumped out early, building a double digit lead midway through the first half. Campbell, normally known for his steady ball-handling and assists, was open from outside and took advantage with two 3-pointers in the first half to open up the Centurion defense. His 14 points before intermission sparked a 46-30 lead at halftime.

Campbell continued his offensive output after the break, scoring often in the paint as well as dishing it to open teammates for jumpers.

The Herd led by as many as 19 in the second half and appeared to have the game well in hand until CCC coach Jamie Foster instituted a full-court press. BLC coach Mario Pharr called an immediate timeout to adjust for the defensive change, but the Centurions defense and improved second-half rebounding allowed them to cut the lead to 77-74 with 5:52 remaining. But Blue Lights showed poise in keeping Carolina at bay down the stretch, hitting free throws in the final minutes to seal the win.

Jorge Garcia added 16 points for BLC. Caleb Young led Carolina Christian (4-7) with 20.

With the victory, BLC surpasses its win total from last year's inaugural campaign with 10 regular-season games remaining.

The Thoroughbreds hit the road for their next game in a first-ever meeting with Patrick Henry College this Friday in Purcellville, Virginia.
